    Apply to host EPSC! Deadline Extended to 15 May

Apply now to host EPSC in 2026 or 2027! EPSC, the premier European gathering in planetary science, presents an exciting opportunity for a motivated and capable Local Organisation Committee (LOC) led by a research institute with close ties to the local planetary science community.  

We seek European cities with venues capable of accommodating 1200+ participants. Applicants can apply for either year, with EPSC 2027 ideally timed for joint hybrid activities with the AAS Division of Planetary Sciences. Interested parties can access the application pack on the Europlanet Society website, with submissions due by the extended deadline of May 15 2024, and host selection announced at EPSC2024.

    EPSC2024 Call for Abstracts

The call for abstracts is now open for the Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC) 2024. EPSC2024 will take place from 8–13 September 2024 at the Henry Ford Building of the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. The meeting will be fully hybrid, with virtual access to all oral and poster sessions. Sessions are organised around programme groups:

- Terrestrial Planets (TP)

- Outer Planet Systems (OPS)

- Missions, Instrumentation, Techniques, Modelling (MITM)

- Small Bodies (comets, KBOs, rings, asteroids, meteorites, dust) (SB)

- Exoplanets, Origins of Planetary Systems and Astrobiology (EXOA)

- Outreach, Diversity, Amateur Astronomy (ODAA)

    Farinella Prize - Call for Nominations

The call for nominations for the 14th edition of the Farinella Prize is now open. The 14th Paolo Farinella Prize will be awarded to a young scientist with outstanding contributions in the field of planetary science concerning ‘Internal structure of planetary bodies: clues on formation processes of the Solar System’, including theoretical, modelling, experimental and observational work on the internal structure of solar system bodies, namely planets, satellites, and small bodies. The award winner will be honored at EPSC2024 in Berlin.

    Iberian Early Career Prize Winners Announced

The Europlanet Iberian Hub is proud to announce the winners of the first planetary early-career prizes in Spain & Portugal. The winner of the "Abraham Zacut" Award for Best Iberian PhD Thesis in Planetary Sciences & Exploration is Jennifer Huidobro (University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU)) for her thesis on "Exploring Martian and Lunar Geochemistry through the study of meteorites, analogs, laboratory simulation, and mission data analysis”. The winner of the "Pedro Nunes" Award for Best Iberian Master’s Thesis in Planetary Sciences & Exploration is Vasco Cardoso (University of Coimbra and University of Alicante) for his thesis on "Collisional Evolution of Jupiter Trojans". 

Many congratulations to the winners and thanks to all candidates for their participation.

    Lunar spinels in the Aristarchus crater and cobra head

This study describes the identification of lunar spinels in sites with anomalous properties of regolith on the lunar surface  The collaboration of co-author, Sergey Velichko, from the Institute of Astronomy of V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University, was supported through the Europlanet 2024 RI programme of visits for Ukrainian researchers.

    Summer School for Sample Return | 24-28 June 2023 | France
marchepas   This summer school, run by the Institut Origines at Aix-Marseille University and the Origins theme from the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, will provide a unique platform to access both basic and cutting edge knowledge related to the study of the origin of terrestrial planets and life based on the analysis of extraterrestrial samples in Earth laboratories. We will have a particular focus on recent and future sample return missions. This multdisciplinary summer school will address domains including cosmochemistry, astrobiology, astrophysics, planetology, and more. We will learn through lectures and practicals from our large set of world experts as well as from more informal exchanges through a series of round tables with dedicated topics. NASA set up an extensive list of working groups that engage in all science areas of HWO. The below form collects information by people declaring interest in joining any of these groups. Signing up in this form does not engage to actually join the group later on, but allows to receive information from the relevant email list.

    Social and Ethical Frontiers in Space Exploration Conference

The European Astrobiology Institute and the Society for Social and Conceptual Issues in Astrobiology are holding a joint meeting to discuss the ethical, political legal, societal and environmental aspects of space exploration.

    Early Careers Workshop: Microsatellites and their use in planetary and astrobiology research

Application deadline: 1 May 2024

This early-careers workshop will take place in Tartu, Estonia from 24-31 August 2024. The workshop enables students and early career scientists to design micro-and nanosatellite missions. The work on the mission designs will continue after the workshop, thus ensuring a long-term impact. 

Co-organised by the European Astrobiology InstituteUniveristy of Tartu and Stockholm University Astrobiology Centre, the workshop will consist of lectures by leading scientists, planning sessions in small groups, as well as open discussions, a poster session and social activities. A limited number of bursaries for students and early career scientists from EAI institutions will be available.
