Why do GMAP Winter School participants need to join Europlanet?

The GMAP Winter School is organised by Europlanet, a non-profit association for the advancement of planetary science. All our activities are run by the community for the community, and are funded through memberships and income from our annual meeting, the Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC).

As well taking part in the GMAP Winter School 2026 and accessing tutorials and resources to help you create planetary geological maps, your Europlanet membership will offer you many benefits, e.g. you can:

  •  Join the Europlanet Community through Discord
  •  Take part in events organised by the Europlanet Early Career (EPEC) Network, including EPEC Annual Week
  •  Apply to access state-of-the-art facilities around the world to carry out scientific experiements through the Transnational Access programme
  •  Get discounted rates for the Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC), Europe’s largest planetary science meeting (take place in Den Haag, Netherlands in 2026 with 1200+ participants)
  •  Access other Europlanet services, including mentoring, expert exchanges, training webinars and much more.

How much does it cost?

If your organisation is a member of Europlanet, you don’t need to pay anything. Just include your organisational email address when you register for the GMAP Winter School. **Note for researchers from Colombia.

If your organisation is not a member, you can join as an individual. Europlanet is committed to widening participation, so offers reduced rates for early career professionals* and for people working in under-represented countries in Europe and around the world**. Standard membership is 50€ per year, but you could pay as little as 15€, depending on your career stage and location. Find out more.

** Note for researchers from Colombia: Europlanet Colombia (through Corporación Científica Laguna) represents all Colombian educational institutions participating in Europlanet. Colombian researchers registering for Europlanet activities, including the GMAP Winter School, should use their Colombian institutional email address (ending in .co).

What happens if I really can't afford even 15€

In exceptional circumstances, Europlanet may offer a Discretionary Membership free of charge. To apply, you will need to set out a clear case for why you do not have the resources to pay the reduced fees already offered and should qualify for a discretionary membership. The Europlanet Executive Board will review applications and, if they feel that the case is justified, they will offer you a Discretionary Membership (a one-year honorary membership). Discretionary Memberships, like other memberships, last for one year and will need to be renewed.

Apply for a Discretionary Membership. Please note, these are for exceptional cases only.
