Europlanet Juice Webinar 3: Lunar Earth Flyby: Perspectives from Navigation, Science & Radiation

27 September 2024
This third Europlanet Juice webinar consists of three short talks: Angela Dietz, spacecraft operations engineer at ESA/ESOC, talks about the Lunar Earth Gravity Assist, or LEGA, from a navigational and operational point of view. Claire Vallat, science operations scientist for the Juice mission at ESA/ESAC, talks about the LEGA from a science instruments point of view. Marco Pinto, research fellow at the Radiation Hardness Assurance and Component Analysis section at ESA/ESTEC talks about radiation, how can be a show stopper for space exploration and what we do to monitor it on Juice.

Europlanet Webinar: "It's alive!" Astrobiology and Planetary Science in Science Fiction

24 September 2024
How does science fiction depict astrobiology and exoplanets? Has it evolved together with the fields? And can science fiction offer us any insights in scientific research or in outreach and education to inspire more people to take an interest in science? Dive into this seminar with Emma Johanna Puranen and Julie Nováková, researchers and science fiction nerds behind anthologies connecting astrobiology and sci-fi such as Life Beyond Us (2023), Around Distant Suns (2021) and Strangest of All (2020).

Europlanet Webinar: Evaluating our Impact on Planetary Science

30 July 2024
In this session, Dr Jen DeWitt shares her experiences evaluating the impact of the Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure on the planetary science community and provides an overview of her findings, which include some surprising highlights. Commissioning an external social scientist to conduct the impact evaluation was an important point of difference for this project, and we explore how we can better evaluate complex and multi-faceted projects to assess their impact on the community.

Juice Science Webinar: Induced Magnetic Fields or How to Peek Below the Surface of the Earth and Jupiter’s Moons

14 June 2024
We welcome Jakub Velímský (Charles University, Prague) and Adam Masters (Imperial College, London), who will give short talks followed by a Q&A session.

Motionally induced magnetic fields in the oceans: Earth and beyond - Jakub Velímský
Motions of electrically conductive saltwater in the presence of Earth's magnetic field
induce secondary electromagnetic fields observable in submarine cable voltages, and magnetic
field measurements by coastal and island geomagnetic observatories, and low-orbit satellites,
such as Swarm. I will discuss how these signals can be exploited to constrain the ocean state,
as well as to probe the electrical structure of the underlying solid Earth.
Detecting magnetic signals broadcast from potential ocean habitats with JUICE - Adam Masters
Jupiter’s moons Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto possess substantial oceans of liquid water under their kilometres-thick surfaces of solid ice. These are potential habitats in which we may one day confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life. I will introduce how the JUICE mission will tell us more about these environments by detecting the natural magnetic signals that are continually broadcast by these bodies of water. Data taken by JUICE’s state-of-the-art magnetometer will allow us to investigate how deep these oceans are, and how salty the water is.

JWST - A New Voyager for the Outer Solar System

21 May 2024
The first two years of JWST scientific operations have produced a treasure trove of new discoveries, from the earliest galaxies and stars, to the myriad environments closer to home. Spectacular infrared images of all four giant planets have provided new views of their vigorous weather systems, wispy hazes, and ionospheric emissions, and revealed the delicate structures in their dusty and icy rings. But the key strength of JWST for Solar System studies are the integral field unit spectrometers, NIRSpec (0.6-5.3 µm) and MIRI (4.9-28.5 µm). These provide spatially-resolved infrared spectroscopy at high spectral resolution across their fields of view, enabling three-dimensional studies of temperatures, clouds, and composition within all four giant planet systems. Uranus and Neptune fit perfectly within JWST’s small fields-of-view, whereas complex mosaics are needed for Jupiter and Saturn. The JWST discoveries include maps of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot and South Polar aurora; observations of Io, Ganymede and the Jovian rings; maps of Saturn’s northern summertime hemisphere; tracking of Titan’s seasonal storms; observations of Saturn’s crystalline rings; and global maps of Uranus and Neptune from the troposphere to the ionosphere. The latter represent one of the most significant new datasets for Ice Giant science since the days of Voyager-2, and it is hoped that these rich observations will be the start of a long-term programme monitoring the evolving appearance of the giant planets over the lifetime of JWST. This presentation by Prof. Leigh Fletcher (University of Leicester) will showcase some of the key giant-planet results from JWST, and how they connect to previous (Voyager, Cassini), current (Juno, Hubble), and future (JUICE, Clipper and Uranus Flagship) exploration.

JUICE - One Year After Launch: News and Outlook

12 April 2024
On the 14th April 2023, JUICE was launched from Kourou by the last but one Ariane 5 rocket. It will spend around 8 years travelling before reaching its destination: the Jupiter system and its icy moons.
One year after launch, and it is time to discuss what has been done with the JUICE team and what is the prospect for the coming years. The cruise phase from Earth to Jupiter could be perceived as eventless, we will show that this is far from the case!

To Bennu & Back: what asteroids can tell us about the origins of the Solar System

20 February 2024
In September 2023, OSIRIS-REx became only the third mission to return samples of an asteroid to Earth. Its target, the carbon-rich asteroid Bennu, holds important clues about the formation of the Solar System and the origins of water and life on Earth. Dr Ashley King (Natural History Museum, London, UK) will talk about the first results from the Bennu samples and why sample return missions are crucial for understanding the evolution of planets.
